In essence, the term cookies designates small files that contain an identifier (a string of letters and numbers) that are placed in the user's browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome) by a web server when the user visits the site associated with the respective web server and they are stored on the user's computer, mobile terminal or other equipment from which the user accesses the Internet.
The identifier is sent back to the server each time the browser requests / accesses the web page.
Cookies are completely "passive" as they do not contain software, viruses or spyware, and cannot access the information on the user's hard drive.

Depending on their lifespan cookies have been classified into "persistent" and "session" cookies.
A persistent, permanent cookie will be stored by a web browser on the hard drive of a computer or device and will remain valid until the date set as its own lifetime, unless it is deleted by the user before the expiration date.
